GP polls: 6,385 nominations filed on 1st day

Bhubaneswar: While filing of nomination papers for the upcoming three-tier panchayat polls began on Wednesday, a total of 6,385 nomination papers for various seats were filed on the first day, according to information available from the State Election Commission (SEC).

Highest number of 531 papers was filed in Ganjam district and lowest number of seven filed in Jharsuguda district. However, no nomination was filed in Maoist-infested Malkangiri district on the day.

Of the 6,385 nominations filed, while 4,733 filed for Ward Member seats, 1071 for Sarpanch, 543 for Panchayat Samiti and 38 were filed for Zilla Parishad seats. It is expected that more number of nominations will be filed today.

It may be noted that the panchayat elections is scheduled to be held in five phases from February 13 to 21.
